Fitz Greene Hollister
Fitz Greene Hollister was born in Washington, CT on April 17, 1837 to Mr. Preston Sherman Hollister, Jr. and Mrs. Phoebe Turner. He was the second cousin of Dwight and Lewis Hollister.
Fitz enlisted on September 14, 1861 in Company I, 8th Infantry Regiment Connecticut Volunteers at the age of 24. Six other young Washington men enlisted with him: Samuel J. Nettleton, Simeon H. Calhoun, Lucius W. Fox, Dwight Hollister, William Black, and Harvery Perkins. He was promoted to: Corporal, reenlisted as “veteran” on December 24, 1863 and then to full Sergeant.
Fitz died on June 15, 1864 in Petersburg, VA after being Shot in the chest during a skirmish near Petersburg in an attempt to advance upon Petersburgh.
