Photograph from collection of The Connecticut Historical Society
Calvin B. Hatch was born in New Preston, CT on November 30, 1840 to Mr. John L. Hatch, a prosperous farmer in New Preston, and Mrs. Diana Canfield. Calvin was the oldest of ten children. His younger brother, Virgil B. Hatch, became a farmer living in New Milford.
He was enlistmented on August 7, 1862 in Co. A., 19th Connecticut 21 Volunteers, Sergeant. He was 27 years old. He was promoted on March 5, 1864 to 2nd Lieutenant, Co. E. in 2nd CT Heavy Artillery.
Calvin exhibits a sense of humor and a lively spirit in the two letters we have from him.
He addresses his 12 year old brother Virgil as “U.S. Senator from Conn.” and
describes the powder magazine he’s assigned to with his tongue firmly in cheek,
as a parlor made of powder kegs and bomb shells
Missing in Action at Cold Harbor, VA June 1, 1864 at age 23. Listed
on the Hatch family monument in Merryall Cemetery in New Milford.
